                                 Two Truths and a Lie

                              By Sofia Cardona Jan.10,2017

Some people don’t believe me when I tell them Carly Rae Jepsen held me when I was a baby. I don’t blame them. If my friend told me Carly Rae Jepsen held them, I don’t know if I would believe them. Sometimes things that happen in life seem unrealistic. But the question is, is it true or is it a lie? In this essay, I will tell you three things about me. Two of them will be true, but one will be a lie. Try and figure out which is the lie.

I have always looked forward to family vacations. I love all the fun that we have. However, lots of new places have at least 1 thing that makes me break into tears. Like when we went to Disneyland. Instead of flying, we had to drive all the way to California. And on top of that, we only stayed there for 3 days! It was really fun, though! My favorite ride was Splash Mountain. There was 1 ride though, that I hated. It was called California Scream’n Cam.(I was 8 at the time) I saw the ride and thought it looked fun. So, I begged my mom to go on it with me. She thought I wouldn’t like it, but after more begging, my mom finally said yes. I was so excited! My aunt went with us, too. But as it turned out, the ride was not at all how I expected it to be. It started really fast, and I screamed and screamed with my eyes closed. On top of that, I had my picture taken on the ride. My mom was screaming, with her eyes closed, I was crying, screaming, and had my eyes closed, and my aunt was laughing. And to make me feel better when it was over, my grandpa took me on the merry-go-round, which didn’t really help.

The next long trip we took was to Edmonton.(This time, I was about 9) Again, we drove, but stayed there for much longer than Disney. We got to Edmonton in the afternoon, and went to see the West Edmonton Mall. We didn’t shop, we just went to look around. We looked at all the stores, and thought about what we wanted to buy/do the next day. It was cool to see that the mall had a skating rink inside of it. But what really caught the eye of me and my siblings, was Galaxyland, the indoor amusement park. Our parents told us that the next day, after we had finished breakfast, we would go back to the mall and go to Galaxyland. We were so excited, we could barely wait to go to Galaxyland! The next day, we all got up early, ate breakfast at a restaurant, and headed to the mall. First we did a tiny bit of shopping, and headed to the area that Galaxyland was in. First we had to get wristbands, so we could go on the rides. It was so fun! I loved going on the roller coasters. I also really like the ship that goes back and forth, and higher and higher. After a while, we went to the Haunted House and Fun House, which were attached to each other. My brother wanted to go into the Haunted House, and my mom said we could. I didn’t want to go in, I wanted to go to the Fun House, but eventually, my mom got me to come. My grandpa and little brother Eli came with us. When we first walked in, there was an alligator, and fake man in an exhibit, and the man was dead, with his guts spilling out. (That was what it looked like to me at 9 yrs old, anyway)After, I was SO scared. I closed my eyes, and held onto my grandpa. Me and my siblings were all crying. Me and my grandpa got lost. While we were lost, my mom found the end, dropped my brother Matthias off with my dad, and came to find us. When we got out of the Haunted House, my dad had just finished calming down my brother. But, right when my brother saw us, he broke into tears again. After that, we went on more fun rides, after we calmed down.

Before I lived in Regina, I lived in Medicine Hat. We would come to Regina often, to visit my grandparents.  One time, during a visit, we decided to go swimming at the Sandra Schmirler. I loved it, because of the big slide. But, I didn’t know how to swim. Since the pool doesn’t have life jackets we could use, like the pool in Medicine Hat. So, my dad would wait at the bottom of the slide, and catch me when I went down. This time, I got to the top of the slide, before my dad was ready to catch me. I slipped, went down the slide, and went into the water. I couldn’t swim up, and then my dad grabbed me and lifted me out of the water. I started to cry, and we decided to go home. After that, I took swimming lessons.

And the lie: The last paragraph. It was true up until the part where my dad waited for me at the bottom of the slide. I did eventually take swimming lessons, but that was because my parents just wanted me to learn.

This Grade Six Year!

Hey guys! I’m back again with another post! I can’t believe that my grade six year is almost over, and next is grade seven! This year has gone by SO fast, and it feels like just yesterday was the first day of school! I love my teacher, Mrs. Crawford, and I’m sad that she is going to one of the new schools. This year has really been a lot easier than I expected. This years math was SO much easier for me! I’m also glad for summer, because that means I can read as much as I want, whenever I want! I also get to travel during the summer! I am probably going to take lots of visits for my cousins in Calgary and Medicine Hat. Plus, in the last week of July, me and my family are going to White Fish, Montana for a week! My cousins say it’s really fun there in the winter, and in the summer! We are going to be staying in my Aunt’s and Tata’s condo! Hopefully it will be lots of fun! See you soon

My Love For Nancy Drew (the old ones)

Hi guys! Today I’m back with another post! I am in love, and I’m obsessed with the book series: Nancy Drew. I’m talking about the old book series, not the new ones. Nancy Drew is about an eighteen yr old girl, named Nancy Drew, daughter of the famous criminal lawyer, Crason Drew. Nancy loves to solve mysteries! She does all of her mysteries with:  Cousins Bess Marvin, and George Fayne, her best friends, Helen Corning, another friend, or Ned Nickerson, her favourite date! Nancy Drew lives with her father, and housekeeper, Hannah Gruen. Nancy and Hannah share a special bond, and Hannah has been with them since the death of Nancy’s mother, when Nancy was very young. There are at least 64 books in the Nancy Drew series, starting with The Secret Of The Old Clock. I love Nancy Drew, because it’s very interesting, and I can never figure out the mystery on my own. Nancy Drew always is in some kind of danger, and in one the books, her father is the one in danger! Once you start on of the Nancy Drew books, you won’t be able to put it down. If you like mystery books, read Nancy Drew!

My life!!!!

Today I am going to tell you guys about me and my family of 9!!! I have 5 siblings, and all of them are younger than me. You guys are probably thinking “Well that makes 6 kids, and there are 2 parents. That makes 8 people!” So, actually, we live with my grandfather, so he is #9. So, my mom grew up in Utah, and Medicine Hat, and my dad was born here in Regina. They were married in Cardston, AB. A little after that, my mom became pregnant, and I was born a year after their marriage, in Calgary. My mom was a teacher, and when I was born, she retired. My mom would like to go back to teaching, once all of my siblings are in school. When I was about 2/3 years old, my parents decided to move to Redcliff, AB. Redcliff is basically attached to Medicine Hat. A little while after we moved to Redcliff, my mom became pregnant, and gave birth to Matthias, my brother. My mom didn’t have a job in Redcliff, but my dad worked for my Nana and Tata (my mom’s parents), for their farm, “Eldorado Farms”. During this time, I got a sister, named Gabriana, and a brother named Elias. When I was around 6 yrs old, (Eli was just a baby) my parents felt like we needed to move to Regina. Even now, I am a little sad we had to move, because all of my family, except for my grandparents on my dad’s side, lived close to me. I also had to leave some very good friends I had made in Redcliff. And now, I barely get to see my siblings in Calgary, AB. But, it was good that we had moved to Regina, for almost right after we moved to Regina, my Grandmother’s illnesses got a whole lot worse. She had to spend many months in the hospital, and would only be able to spend  a few days at home. Unfortunately, the medicines my grandma needed to take didn’t really work together, and on March 9, 2012 (a day after Matthias’ birthday) my grandma passed away. I can still remember that morning, when my mom gathered all of the kids. Tears were pouring down her face, as she said: “This morning, grandma died” I was only seven at the time, and now I don’t remember what she was like, because I never really saw her. The only thing I really remember about her is that when we lived in Redcliff, we never really visited her. Every time we visit, she would have a present for us. One year, she even got me a slurpee machine! I felt really sad for my dad, and grandpa, because I knew they must be feeling horrible. After the funeral, we just went back to normal living. In 2014, my sister Analea was born, and exactly a year ago, my sister Amelia was born. I hoped you enjoyed this post, and hope to write more posts soon. See you soon!

Halloween

Hi guys! Today, I am going to talk about Halloween. Like every year, my aunt is coming with my cousin, to go trick or treating with us. Also, today I am going to the Halloween Howl. The Halloween Howl is a Halloween party, at my school. There are games, shows, sweets, and a dance. In case you were wondering, I have absolutely no idea for what to be for Halloween. So, if you have any ideas for me, comment or tell me. See you soon!

New Social Studies Project!

Hey guys! Today I am going to write about our new Social Studies project. Our assignment is to build a castle. Now, I know that sounds super hard, but it really isn’t. Mrs. Crawford gave us 3 choices, on how to build our castle: Minecraft, Build With Chrome, or a 3D model. In case you were wondering, Build With Chrome is where you can build with Lego online. I am going to build a castle on minecraft. After we are done, we are going to present our castles. However, the castle has to have real parts of a castle. It also has to be decorated like a castle. I am so excited!    See you soon!

Band

Today, I had band sectionals. Band sectionals are when all the kids that play a certain instrument go to the library, and  band specialists help those kids play that instrument. I play the trombone. If you are a wondering what the difference is between a trumpet and trombone is, I will tell you. A trombone has a slide, and the trumpet has buttons. A trombone is bigger than than a trumpet. Anyway, during my sectional, we worked on playing the notes together. It can be hard sometimes, because everybody has to play the exact same note. Plus we have to start and end at the same time. Playing the trombone is a bit hard for me, because it is hard for me to tongue the notes. However, it is easy to move the slider to position. Plus, it is easier to read the notes, since I play piano, and you have to read notes in order to do so. Overall, band is fun!
